15 June – 30 June 2007, Balancing the Light, John McSorley
*Click Here For Photos From The Successful Opening Night*

John McSorley was born in Lisburn in 1948 and has lived on the shores of Strangford Lough for almost twenty years. He has been painting since childhood and had his first one-man show in Belfast in 1971. Often depicting the strange and magical light effects of dawn, dusk, moonlight and starlight, each canvas is a one-off, capturing a unique moment in time and place. The paintings shimmer and glow with reflected light – moonlight flits on distant water, spangles of light cascade from a rising moon, stardust falls on a wooded hillside. Poetically romantic but never sentimental, his work displays a luminous and mysterious quality, and some paintings are almost dreamlike in content.
McSorley believes that ‘imagination is one of the artist’s greatest assets’; for him, ‘capturing the essence of the scene is more important than strict perspective or pictorial accuracy – that is true artistic licence,’ he says. This exhibition – Balancing the Light – celebrates his vision.
